Mad River Enterprises partnered with HUB Technologies to perform a wireless network site survey at Lab Central’s 4th floor in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The goal was to assess and improve network performance in a space that faced numerous connectivity challenges due to complex, multi-tenant environments.

The mission was to identify existing wireless network inefficiencies at Lab Central, particularly concerning signal interference, SSID duplication, and improper frequency configurations. This assessment aimed to propose solutions that would ensure more reliable and secure connectivity for all users on the floor.
Tackling Signal Overload & Security Gaps
Lab Central’s 17,000-square-foot 4th floor was overwhelmed with overlapping wireless signals from multiple networks and devices, causing network interference, security vulnerabilities, and performance issues. Multiple SSIDs with minor naming variations added to the confusion, and there was a significant amount of signal bleed from adjacent floors and buildings.
Precision in Action
Mad River Enterprises conducted a comprehensive wireless site survey using industry-leading tools like Ekahau Survey Pro and Ekahau Sidekick. The analysis identified the root causes of the interference and recommended several mitigation strategies. These included reducing the number of SSIDs, turning off the 2.4GHz radios where feasible, and prioritizing 5GHz channels for better performance. Additionally, window treatments were suggested to block external signal interference from adjacent buildings.
Seamless Connectivity Unlocked
By implementing the proposed changes, Lab Central was able to significantly reduce wireless interference and optimize network performance. The restructuring of the SSIDs and frequency management led to more stable connections, reduced signal conflicts, and a smoother user experience across the multi-tenant environment.
